Parting Glances aptly describes this collection of striking photo essays on six diverse communities in Singapore that are on the brink of change. Combining archival images, contemporary color photographs, and poignant, reflective interviews with merchants and residents, this book explores what is gained and what is lost in a country’s quest for progress and modernization. In doing so, neighborhoods that may otherwise be lost to the ravages of time are immortalized through word and image. Moving beyond the scope of typical travel guides, the book makes the factual become personal, and the past become contemporary.
